I suppose you understand now why it’s just called the Grand Friday Mosque. Constructed in 1656, this imposing structure has enough space for five thousand people. Situated in Male, the mosque is the most obvious feature of the island and is visible form afar.
Opposite the Friday Mosque is another fabulous historical structure form the age of the Sultans. The Mulee Aage Palace was constructed in 1906 and was home to the Sultan Mohammed Shamsudeen the third’s son. It has also been the home of the president of Maldives after it became a republic. Today, it is the President’s office and the site for important official meetings.
If you are looking for more history, stay in Male and look around to discover the National Museum of Maldives. The Sultan Park, where the museum is located, was a part of the Sultan’s palace and therefore, has various items from his personal use. The different items in the museum give the modern visitor a very good understanding of the splendor and luxury of their lives in those bygone times.
Maldives are a bunch of islands grouped together, however, the capital city of Male does not have a beach. All the other islands have beautiful beaches and water sports that are natural. To make up for this, an artificial beach has been constructed in Male and is the site of many enjoyable games and sports that are enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. It is no different than any other beach and more than compensates for the lack of a real one.
The Maldives holidays are a time for the whole family to enjoy. Due to its excellent package of climate, historical sites, nature and modern facilities, Maldives is usually a top priority for many holidaymakers.
